Do not press the power button to turn off the computer, you have to be careful so you don't lose unsaved changes or cause any other problems.

Turn off the computer by turning off Windows XP. Stand by and restart, too.

This is the turn off computer box.

If you decide to keep the computer on, then close the turn off computer box.

This completes the turn off computer box.

Restart

Restart the computer.

Wait for Windows XP to log off, shut down, and turn off the computer, then wait for it to automatically turn the computer back on.

Stand By

Open a program, for example, open Notepad. You don't have to write a note or anything, just open it.

Stand by.

Wait for Windows XP to stand by. Press the power button to wake up the computer, then log on to your account again.

When you turn off the computer or restart, it closes any programs that were open. When you stand by, it keeps all your programs open, so Notepad is still open and everything is exactly the way you left it.
